In 1916 he was the French sponge specialists Émile Topsent first described. It was named after Louis Joubin , a professor at the Zoological Museum in Paris.
He has the lowest of all species metabolism and the lowest oxygen consumption . Adult sponges can grow to 2 meters and reach a diameter of 1.7 m. The color varies from pale yellow of these sponges to white.
The distribution are Antarctic waters to the South Shetland Islands at a depth of 45-441 m. Because of its cone-shaped appearance, he is known in English as Volcano Sponge.
1996 Thomas Brey and Susanne Gatti calculated from Bremerhaven Polarstern expedition based on the measurement of oxygen consumption at the age of these animals 10,000 years after the American scientist Paul Dayton within ten years had hardly found a growth.
